Sacramento's Premier Custom Paver and Hardscape Contractor

Build Beautiful, Durable Patios, Walkways, and Driveways with Interlocking Pavers

Why Choose Custom Pavers?

Upgrade your outdoor living space with a stunning and long-lasting paver hardscape from Serenity Designs. As Sacramento’s trusted paver contractor, we specialize in the expert installation of interlocking pavers for patios, pool decks, walkways, and driveways. Pavers offer an unmatched combination of design versatility, strength, and timeless beauty, providing a superior alternative to cracked concrete and faded stamped concrete.

  • Unmatched Durability: Pavers are manufactured to be incredibly dense and strong, capable of withstanding heavy traffic and resisting cracking far better than a single slab of concrete.
  • Flexibility & Repairability: The interlocking system allows the surface to flex with ground movement, preventing cracks. If a paver ever does get stained or damaged, it can be easily lifted and replaced.
  • Design Freedom: With a vast array of shapes, sizes, colors, and textures, the design possibilities are endless. We can create intricate patterns like herringbone, basketweave, or running bond to complement your home’s style.
  • Permeable Options: For eco-friendly solutions, we can install permeable pavers that allow rainwater to filter through into the ground, reducing runoff and helping to recharge groundwater.

Paver & Hardscape Material Options

We work with top manufacturers like Belgard, Pavestone, and Basalite to offer a wide selection:

Project Timeline: Building a Better Boundary

  • Week 1: Design & Material Selection: We meet with you to design the layout of your patio, walkway, or driveway. We’ll help you select the perfect paver style, color, and pattern and provide a detailed project plan.
  • Week 2: Demolition & Excavation: Our team will remove any existing concrete or lawn. We then excavate the area to the proper depth, which is the most critical step for ensuring a long-lasting installation.
  • Week 2-3: Base Preparation: We install and compact several inches of Class II road base in layers, creating a solid, stable foundation that will not sink or settle. The slope is precisely graded away from your home for proper drainage.
  • Week 3: Paver Installation: A one-inch layer of sand is screeded perfectly level for the pavers to rest on. Our expert masons then lay each paver by hand, making intricate cuts around edges and features.
  • Week 4: Finishing: We install a concrete bond beam or plastic edge restraint around the perimeter to lock the pavers in place. We then sweep polymeric sand into the joints and compact the entire surface. The sand, when activated with water, hardens to prevent weeds and insect intrusion.

The Do's and Don'ts of Paver Installation

  • DO insist on a deep, properly compacted base. 90% of a paver project’s success is the base you can’t see. For patios, 4-6 inches is standard; for driveways, 8-12 inches is required.
  • DON’T lay pavers on a bed of dirt or an un-compacted base. The surface will quickly become uneven and fail.
  • DO use a high-quality polymeric sand in the joints. It’s far superior to regular sand for locking pavers and preventing weeds.
  • DON’T let an installer use a plate compactor directly on the pavers without a protective pad. This can scuff or crack the surface.
  • DO consider sealing your pavers. While not always necessary, a sealer can enhance the color and provide protection against stains from oil, grease, or wine.

Maintenance Considerations

  • Cleaning: Sweep regularly and rinse with a hose as needed. For tougher stains, use a power washer on a low setting with a fan tip.
  • Weed Control: While polymeric sand is highly effective, an occasional weed may pop up. These are easily removed or treated.
  • Re-sanding: Over many years, the joints may need a light re-application of polymeric sand.
  • Sealing: If you choose to seal your pavers, it will need to be re-applied every 3-5 years, depending on the product and traffic.

Integrating Pavers into Your Backyard Oasis

A paver patio is the foundation of your outdoor living area. We design hardscapes that create a seamless flow from your home’s interior to your outdoor kitchen, fire pit, or pool.

The right paver choice and layout will define your space, guide traffic, and tie all the elements of your landscape together into a cohesive, beautiful whole.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Are pavers more expensive than concrete? Initially, a professional paver installation is more expensive than a basic concrete slab. However, its longevity, beauty, and lack of cracking issues make it a better long-term investment.
  • Are paver driveways strong enough for cars and RVs? Absolutely. When installed with the proper deep base, interlocking pavers create a surface that is significantly stronger and more durable than a concrete driveway.
  • Do pavers get hot in the Sacramento sun? All surfaces get hot in direct sun. Lighter colored pavers will stay significantly cooler to the touch than darker ones, making them a better choice for pool decks.
