FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ: Got Questions? We've Got You Covered!

We know building a pool or designing your dream landscape can feel overwhelming. That’s why we’ve put together this Frequently Asked Questions page to make things simpler and help you feel confident about your project!

Read our answers to the most common questions in our industry.

What’s Included in a Complimentary Design Consultation?

Our complimentary design consultation kicks off with a quick phone call with one of our experienced designers. We’ll chat about your ideas, goals, and vision while giving you a basic overview of budgeting for your project. We want to make sure your design fits your expectations and your budget. If everything aligns, we’ll work hard to maximize the value of your time.

After the initial consultation, we’ll move on to creating a design package. This is where we get hands-on—measuring your yard, discussing plant options, deciding on pool placement, and visualizing everything to bring your dream to life with our comprehensive design package.

How Long Does the Design Process Take?

On average, it takes about 4 to 6 weeks to complete a design, depending on how quickly we can communicate and finalize details with you.

When Do You Pay the Design Fee?

The design fee is paid upfront at the start of the project. This means we can start creating and delivering designs right away without waiting on payment milestones. It keeps things smooth and efficient for both of us!

Do You Have Contractors to Handle Construction?

Yes, we handle building a swimming pool too! We are a licensed pool builder and landscape contractor. In fact, we prefer to design and build our projects because we know the ins and outs of our plans. But we also get that some clients like to handle the installation themselves, and that’s totally fine too. If you’d rather leave the heavy lifting to us, our team offers full-scale construction services.

Once the design is ready, we’ll give you a detailed quote based on your needs. If you decide to hire us for the job, we’ll take care of the entire project. If you go with another contractor, no worries—we’re happy to offer additional consultations if you need guidance, but project management won’t be part of our role in that case.

Curious about the process? Watch your dream project evolve from a 3D rendering to a stunning custom-built pool and landscape!

Can We Use Your Design To Get Quotes From Other Companies?

Technically, yes, but we don’t recommend it. Our designs are detailed and often require precise measurements and high-quality craftsmanship to bring them to life. Plus, designs don’t typically include all the info needed for permitting unless that’s part of your package, so it might not work as seamlessly as you’d hope.

What if I don’t like the design?

We want you to love your design, so our designer will keep you updated throughout the process to make sure everything’s on track. If the first draft doesn’t feel right, no worries—your first revision is on the house.

For example, if you originally wanted a freeform pool but later decide you prefer a geometric style, we’ll revise your design at no extra cost. If after that you still want changes, you can purchase additional revisions. We’ll work with you to get it just right!

Can you install a design I already have?

Absolutely! If you’ve got a design ready to go, we’re happy to handle the installation. We’ll just need to review your plans first so we can give you an accurate quote. Once the installation starts, we’re also happy to consult on any changes you might want to make along the way.

Why choose a Serenity design instead of just getting a free estimate from another contractor?

Here’s why:

  1. Fewer appointments with contractors (no one likes endless meetings).
  2. Everyone bidding on the project gets the same design, so there’s no confusion.
  3. You can focus on finishing the design phase first, then plan the rest without feeling overwhelmed.
  4. You’ll get more accurate bids with less guesswork, which makes the entire process smoother.
  5. It’s way easier (and cheaper) to tweak a design than to fix something after it’s built.
  6. Bonus: Your design is FREE with a contracted project of $30k or more (discount applied at the end of the project installation).

What’s the Difference Between Landscape Designers and Contractors?

Ever wondered who does what when it comes to creating your dream outdoor space? Here’s a quick breakdown:

Landscape designers focus on the creative side of things. They’ll help you with design ideas, planting plans, lighting layouts, and sometimes even material selection or plant placement. While they can give you awesome concepts for garden structures, irrigation systems, or hardscape layouts, they’re not licensed to handle construction drawings or the actual build.

Their expertise is all about residential design—choosing the right plants, hardscape options, and design strategies. They often team up with contractors to make sure your vision comes to life perfectly.

Landscape contractors, on the other hand, are licensed pros who take those designs and make them a reality. Some contractors even offer design services, so if you’re working with a design/build company, it’s good to clarify their process. Will you get detailed drawings, or just a verbal plan? And don’t forget, some companies roll design fees into the overall construction cost—just make sure you understand the breakdown in case you want to hire someone else to handle the build.

At Serenity Designs, we’re proud to be both a licensed landscape design firm and contractor. That means we handle the whole process—from concept to construction—making everything seamless for you.

Why settle for just a free estimate from a random crew when you can have the expertise and creativity of a professional landscaping company? Let us help bring your dream outdoor space to life. Contact us today to get started!

What’s a Fair Landscape Construction Budget?

If you’re planning a landscape project, setting a clear budget is key. Talk openly about your budget with your designer—they’ll help you strike the right balance between premium materials and cost-effective options to create a stunning space that works for you.

Before getting contractor quotes, remember to account for ongoing maintenance. Keeping up with your new landscape ensures it stays beautiful and protects your investment for years to come.

As a general rule, plan to spend around 5-10% of your home’s total value (including land) for landscaping. For example, if your home is worth $550,000, a budget of $27,500 to $55,500 can deliver amazing results—and potentially give you up to a 200% return on investment. Unique materials, mature plants, or intricate hardscapes can boost this even further.

In some parts of California, land is just as valuable as the home itself. Thoughtful, well-maintained landscaping can significantly increase your property value. Learn more about intelligent landscape design here.

What’s a Fair Swimming Pool Construction Budget?

Swimming pools are a big investment, but they’re worth it if done right. Keep in mind we only design concrete pools aka gunite, inground swimming pools which require some investments but long-lasting. Introductory inground pool costs are between $65,000 to $90,000, depending on size and type. Want custom elements like water features, rockwork, or retaining walls? Those will add to the price, but they’ll also make your pool unique.

The first step is setting a realistic budget. At Serenity Designs, we work closely with you to keep things within your financial goals while still matching your vision. We’ll help you create a plan that fits your project costs, and we even offer financing options if needed.
